General Guidelines for the Data Visualization Studio

Filters

General information for utilizing filters in all reports:
  • When users first launch a report from the Landing Page, the required filter selections (indicated by a red asterisk) need to be made before the data can be visualized.  A message will appear to indicate that there is no data for the current selections and to adjust the filters.   This message could also appear if there is an invalid filter selection.
  •  Filters work independently across dashboards.  Changing a filter in one report will not impact filters selected in another report.

  • For multi-select filters:
    • Once a selection is made the buttons for Apply and Cancel will become enabled at the bottom of the filter dropdown list.  Apply will update your selections and Cancel will reset to previous selections.  After selecting, click outside the dropdown to hide the filter menu.
    • A filter icon "Click to Show All Values" will appear when you hover over a filter that is in use.  Selecting the icon will change the filter to view all values.  The icon is disabled if the filter is already set to show all values.
    • If this filter has six or more options:
      • A search enabled icon is enabled at the top of the filter menu.  Users can enter search text to limit the dropdown menu options.
      • If an invalid search text is entered, a "No Matches." message appears.  Clear out the search text using the clear icon (X) or hitting ESC.

            Search (multi-select filter)
            Multi-select filters search feature

  • Single-select slider filter:
    • The text box above the slider will indicate the current filter selected.
    • To search the filter options, click on the search icon on the right of the filter.
      • Enter into the search text box your search criteria.  Any filter option that includes the text entered will display for selection.  Select the filter option you want to view.
      • Entering an asterisk in the search text will display all options for this filter.
      • If an invalid search text is entered, a "No Matches." message appears.  Clear out the search text using the clear icon (X) or hitting ESC.
    • To navigate through the filter options one at a time, select the < (previous) or > (next) buttons to the right of the slider to move through each filter option one at a time.   These navigation buttons are only enabled if there is more than one filter selection that can be made.
    • You can also navigate by sliding the filter to another selection within the slider.

Zoom
Data Visualization Studio reports that include plots have a zoom functionality enabled to expand our plot to get a closer view of a set of data points.
  • Hover the mouse in the plot near the top of the Y-axis to have the zoom menu appear.   The menu contains icons for the following options (from top to bottom):  Zoom In, Zoom Out, Zoom Home, Zoom Portion
         zoom menu

  • Choose the Zoom In (+) or Zoom Out (-) icons to do a general zoom in or zoom out of the plot.  Select the Zoom Home icon  to return to the original view.
zoom in       zoom out        zoom home

  • To zoom to a specific area of the plot, select the Zoom Portion icon and then the Zoom Area icon, which is the first icon in the Zoom Portion menu.   Click onto the plot and drag a box over the area you want to zoom into.  Select the Zoom Home icon to return to the original view.
          zoom area       zoom home

  • It is best practice to always return to the original view (Zoom Home) before changing any other filters or moving to another analysis.  The zoom will persist if you change to a new analysis without returning to the home view.

  • Troubleshooting:  If your cursor remains in zoom mode (a magnifying glass with a plus sign inside it) even after returning to the original (home) view, you may need to select the Zoom Portion icon again and select Pan (the second icon option within this menu, next to Zoom Area).  The cursor should now return to normal.

Toolbar
At the bottom of all PARcore Data Visualization Studio screens, the following Toolbar is available with hyperlinks:

Toolbar image

  • Undo My Last Action:  Go back one step at a time to undo a selection or action taken on the current page.
  • Redo My Last Action:  Move forward one step at a time to redo a selection or action taken on the current page.  This will be disabled if there were no previous steps to redo.
  • Reset View:  Users who launch Tableau from the PARcore UI should not use this feature.  The Reset View functionality allows filter selections to reset to the default selections.  However, due to the way in which parameters are launched from PARcore, using this toolbar selection will empty your report and you will have to re-launch it from PARcore to view it again.
  • Refresh Data In This View:  Refresh the data source connection.
  • Pause Data Queries or Resume:  As the user interacts with a view, the server sometimes has to query the data source to update the view.  To temporarily stop updates to that the user can more quickly interact with the view, the Pause button can be utilized.  Clicking the same icon again once it is paused will Resume and automatically query the data source as needed.
  • Data Details:  When the Tableau Catalogue is enabled in your environment, you can use the Data Details pane to see the visualization information, including information such as the underlying Tableau workbook and data sources and fields in use.  This is not currently enabled.
  • View:  Allows users to change and save a different view of the report.  This is not enabled for users with viewer licenses.
  • Download:  Allows the user to download underlying source data into different formats.
  • Full Screen:  Allows the users to see the dashboard in full screen view.
